[They haven't spent much time together lately, but Jean would never forget about Angel. On Christmas morning, she'll get a delivery from RahRah Bird, who will accompany the drop off with a little cheer routine--not an intended part of the gift, but a pleasant bonus--before flittering off to go say hi to Bailey.]
[Inside the package is a collection of herbal teas, along with some raw honey and fancy sugars to add to them, and a mug with a Slyveon on it to drink it from. There's also a picture that Jean drew of Angel, Krieg, and himself, with their arms around each other's shoulders and looking very happy.]
Angel has no doubt come to expect this by now - it's Valentine's Day - their third one since they came here. That morning when she wakes up, she'll be greeted by the sight of a vase filled with pink and white flowers. There's also a pink box filled with one dozen chocolate cupcakes - frosted with white and pink swirled buttercream - and a set of hair clips featuring Eevees and Sylveons.
The accompanying card is handmade - just a folded piece of cardstock, really - and he's carefully drawn a heart on the front. Not like, an anatomically correct heart, but a stylized heart typical of the holiday. He used a red marker, and it's pretty crooked, but he put the effort in. He's written her name in all caps in the middle of the heart. Inside, it reads:
Angel, you might have heard this from miss Maya already but would you like to play Dungeons and Dragonites with us? Or, I guess... it's Bunkers and Badasses where you are from, right?
The group we were going to join... didn't work out. So we want to try and start our own. We'd like for you to join too, if you are interested. Krieg too, of course.
I believe I saw that group as well. [That had been a delightful conversation.] You would have to teach me how, but I would be more than happy to join the both of you. And whoever else you invite, too.
Just the four of us sounds lovely. It will be nice to be around all of you, and to learn a new game.
When you have a moment, will you explain some of the basics to me? You make a character, right? I'd like to start laying some of the groundwork, I think.
That's right! I can send you the rules, though I think miss Maya has them in actual physical books if that's easier for you to read.
There is a lot of different characters you can make, anything from barbarians who just use physical force to wizards and sorcerers that use magic. Maybe the four of us could get together and come up with some characters together. You, Maya and Krieg could coordinate what sort of characters you are playing. It works best if you all have different niches you can fill.
And, well, I suspect Krieg is definitely going to need some help filling out his character sheet -- that's what you use to keep track of your character and their stats and attacks.
[Angel almost misses having a planet-sized computer-brain. Reading these rules would be a lot easier.]
You can send me a file. It shouldn't be a problem for me to read, but if I do have questions I know who I can go to. I know lots of people I can go to. :)
A barbarian sounds kind of fun. 0:) Can I yell a lot? Are they like psychos, can I yell about meat?
You don't have to worry about Krieg, though. Maya and I will help him. More Maya than Krieg I'm sure but.. We'll take care of him, that's what's important.
Well, that is the great thing about D&D: You can do anything you want!
(within the reasonable restraints of the class rules, of course.)
You can be a great and powerful wizard. Or a druid who can change into a pokemon (or, I guess, animal, if we are not constraining ourselves to concepts from this world) form. Or a Paladin on a holy mission. Or a barbarian who yells a lot about meat. That's what makes the game fun.
A yelling barbarian???? [It's a role that's entirely unlike her. The idea of even half-heartedly pantomiming her in-character actions forces a sweat to her palms. Her heart rate ticks up just a little.]
Sounds perfect for me. Do I get to have a shiny meat bicycle? Or... Steed, I suppose. If we're being thematic
video; backdated to. whenever the magikarp fishing contest was.
[Armin had entered the fishing contest in the hopes of catching a nice patterned magikap that he could name after Noctis. What he hadn't dared think or hope was actually being the one who would get the golden fish!
Honestly, he's still feeling a little dazed about it all, and he needs someone to share his excitement with. Which is why Angel is getting a video of Armin grinning widely, his arms full of shiny Magikarp. No seriously, really full. Magikarp are pretty big fish and Armin is holding onto this entire wriggling monster as if it is his favourite stuffed animal.]
[That is.... a very big fish. She'd heard about the contests but... with her team in a state of disarray, she'd decided not to participate this go round. Clearly, she's missed out on something though.]
Armin? What is that? [It's clear that it's a Magikarp, but it's been ages since she's seen one outside the normal palette. If it weren't moving, she might have thought it was Armin's favorite stuffed animal.]
He definitely didn't make it easy on me. He kept me on my toes for quite a while before I was able to reel him in. Hopefully, that means he'll make a great pokemon for trainer battles too. I mean, I don't think I can call myself a water pokemon expert if I don't even have a Gyarados.
[It's one of the more popular water pokemon out there. He should definitely have experience with it!]
I caught a few regular patterned ones first, and if I'm honest, I nearly fell off the dock in surprise when I first caught a glance of him.
[He hadn't managed to reel it in yet at that point, so it was a good thing he didn't.]
I bet he'll be quite the fighter. Especially if he has such a talented trainer to guide him.
[Why yes, Angel will absolutely heap on the praise. Armin deserves it after such an amazing catch.]
I'm glad you didn't actually fall in. Though... Would it be considered cheating if you had fallen in and wrestled it to the surface. [Now that she's imagining it, it sounds like the kind of fishing Krieg would enjoy.]
Did you get to keep the other fish you caught? What patterns did you find?
[About three minutes after Lance's message to the network, Angel will be able to hear the pat-pat-pat of rushing feet before Armin all but skids around the doorpost, his eyes shining fever-bright and his smile wide enough that it might actually sprain his cheeks at this rather.]
Angel! Angel, did you see?
[Someone is very excited about the announcement and as the closest person to him (both in terms of actual physical location and emotionally) Angel is going to have to field the bunt of Armin's immediate excitement.]
[Angel was actually just rousing herself to go find Armin, so she very nearly slams into him in the door. She has to grip his upper arms to keep from losing her balance and falling over, but it's clear even despite her wobbling that she's excited.
It's probably also the happiest she's looked since Krieg left.]
Sinnoh! [Soft-spoken though she is, this declaration is very loud.] A vacation to a new region! There's so much we could explore!
[Sometimes the gear brings bad news, but sometimes it brings very good news.
His hand automatically shoots to her back when she nearly bumps into him, holding her steady, but for once, there are no apologies. He's too excited for apologies.]
Isn't it incredible? I hope they'll let us explore outside of the city. I want to see as much as I can. And maybe when the people actually get to meet us, they will understand that we aren't any different from them. That they won't need to be afraid of us.
[Who knows, maybe in time they'll be able to travel to Sinnoh freely! What a dream that would be!]
[Angel thinks for a second to be embarrassed, overwhelmed by the touch against her back. But both of their minds are moving too quick for that, and she's already jumping back into the conversation even as she eases a hint closer to him.]
Who could be afraid of you, Armin? You are the kindest, wisest man I've met. I can't think of anyone else who might serve best as ambassador to Sinnoh.
Do you think that could be a title? Could we convince Lance of that?
[Armin flushes, shaking his head, but at the same time, there is too much excitement coursing through him to falter or grind to a halt on account of sheer embarrassment at the compliment.]
I really don't think I'm anything that special.
[He's laughing a bit as he says it. It's just. He's so happy right now. He really can't help it.]
But that is the point, isn't it? All of us that have come here, we've got different values and ways of seeing things, but that's really not that different from the people from this world, right? We are all just people and we can learn to see eye to eye on most subjects. I think the people of Sinnoh just have to meet us and they'll realise that too.
[She'll spare him another onslaught of compliments and niceties for now, distracted as she is by his determination. She figures he's on to something -- they're still mostly normal people leading mostly normal lives.]
What do you want to see first? Who do you want to talk to first? It feels like we'll hardly have enough time to fit everything in, we need to start planning now!
