Really? I think it suits'em. I mean...compared to Glameow. And if ya ask me, Puruglies have better temperament. Mine does, anyway.
Oh, he's this Haxorus I inherited. A buddy of mine went home, he left me a bunch of his Pokemon. I dunno what's wrong with him, he eats stuff he's not supposed to eat. D.B.'s doing good, a little jealous I've got another dog.
But uh...I kinda mentioned that for a reason. Cause I know you've got...a different approach to training than me. Was kinda wondering if you had any tips. I feel kinda...shitty, keeping Havoc in his ball all the time? The thing wants to run around and stuff. And he was my buddy's starter ya know? Plus, he's literally my most powerful Pokemon, I wanna be able to train him and battle with him. Manaka keeps telling me I should let him out with D.B., let'em influence each other, but...
Honest to god, princess, I'm scared to let my little guy anywhere near'im. D.B.'s a lover, not a fighter!
[After noticing Handsome Jack's post, it wasn't hard to figure out the girl who responded first was his mentioned daughter. It also wasn't hard, as someone who'd lived for centuries with a controlling and abusive brother, to sort of...at least wonder about the tone of the responses, the words used, the expressions, etc. It strikes a chord that Anthy doesn't like to be struck, and frankly? She'd like it to not be struck anymore, whatever it takes.]
Hello. I'm sorry for messaging you out of the blue when I'm a stranger to you, but I just wanted to be sure of something. Are you the Birthday Girl today?
[This... was an odd message to receive. She expected a number of messages from those who shew knew. This... she didn't expect this at all, though at least her mysterious benefactor recognized the oddness of it all.]
[Pidgey Post is at it again! A particularly pooped Pidgey arrives with a teeny tiny package, in addition to its own little bag of berries; fuel for the long flight, as it were.
The contents meant for Angel are simply a note and the glittering fragment of a red gem.
The attached note reads:]
My dearest Angel,
I hope this arrives by your birthday. I'm sorry I can't visit you myself, but I'm afraid the ferry from the Sevii Islands wouldn't put me back at a Pokemon Center in time. Still, may you have a wonderful day surrounded by those who love and cherish you.
Best wishes, Anders
P.S. This little one worked very hard. Please be sure to thank it again for me.
[ Walter's extremely nervous about this but after the Jennifer Incident, he wants to get out of the house for a bit. And he had heard Handsome Jack's post, even if he never responded (because why would he). ]
Angel. I heard it was your birthday yesterday. I didn't contact you because of a slight problem but. [ There's a pause as he still has to make himself say it ] Would you like to meet me at the bakery? They do really nice cinnamon buns. We could have some, to celebrate...
I do not believe that even those Jack is closest to are considered his friends. How did you two meet, if you do not mind me asking. You seem very sweet (thank you for the well-wishes, by the way) -- not exactly his type.
[Certainly enough, coupled with both Angel's curiosity and her knowledge of her father.]
[Angel's beaming smile kicked up the second Walter's face appeared on her feed. She listened to his message for a moment, then nodded vigorously, all before clicking on her own feed.]
[The result was a slightly flustered Angel, nodding once more.]
I would be delighted to, my friend. I... don't think I've ever heard of cinnamon buns, though.
[ Ah, good! He clearly relaxes a little at her affirmation, smiling shyly back. ] Neither had I before I came here. But if you don't like them, we can get something else.
[Early on friday morning, Angel is going to have a visitor. A visitor in the form of a polite, large noctowl carrying a package. Inside, she'll find three things.
First there is a card. Inside, one half of the card is covered in a large drawing of Angel sharing ice cream with Adorababy. It looks like a lot of time and effort went into it, done by someone with a fair bit of talent and promise. It's got shading, colouring, the whole gamut. The other half is covered in neat, slightly slanted cursive writing.
To Angel,
Happy birthday, Angel. I really hope Amadeus will manage to get there in time. We wish we could've given you these in person, but we had already booked tickets on the ferry to the Sevii Islands when we heard about your birthday.
I hope you have a wonderful day, and I hope to see you in person soon again. We'll likely be spending the rest of the month on the Sevii Islands. There's supposed to be so much to see. You're always welcome to come join us, but else, lets meet up again when we are back on the main land.
All the best.
Armin.
PS: I hope you like the gifts. Miss Botan gave us some advice.
A slightly more messy, scrawled Jean goes along Armin's name.
As for the gifts.
The first package is the biggest one. Inside, Angel's going to find a large squishable Sylveon. It's soft, it's cute, it's... probably large enough that she is going to have to make Krieg carry it while they travel.
The second package is much smaller and contains a selection of hair ties, with cute poke-cats on the buttons. There's also another note here, in Armin's hand writing:
If Anders asks, please let him know we bought these in Olivine
We met in person. I'd been traveling before I came here, and I also traveled once I woke up in this place, and found myself in Goldenrod City. We happened to meet there. Should I be concerned that he has a type?
[Angel's voice was soft, perhaps even shy when she spoke next. It didn't help that her father was apart of the conversation in some way or another. Funny how he had a way of sneaking into her conversations.]
I'm... getting lunch with my father today, so perhaps tomorrow? Would that still be okay?
Mmm. I am sorry that you had the misfortune of running into him. He has... calmed down in his time here, but he does have a rather... unpleasant personality, I've noticed.
It is unfortunate that you have had to develop such a trait. Or perhaps that such a trait is so necessary anymore.
[Concerning too, that such a seemingly nice person had been caught up with Jack. Of course, it was easy to be fooled by text, and so Angel maintained her wariness.]
Have you ever been hurt here, Anthy? Tried to do something dangerous? It seems to be outside the bounds of this reality. Back home, when he and those of his ilk got together, they could cause considerable harm. Here, that isn't the case.
Yes, I agree. I didn't ever want to have to use it again. But it's more important to use it to keep going than it is to forsake it and let ruin come. I am much more tired of ruin.
[In comparison to Jack, Anthy's motives are pretty benevolent, but she's fully aware of how she comes off to others. Being deceptive had been a necessity for centuries.]
No, miss. No one here has hurt me. I intend to keep it that way. And from what you've said of your father, I hope you intend to keep it that way for yourself.
That's fine. [ He doesn't mind. He knows who her father is, given Jack's not exactly subtle. But he hasn't told Jack (namely because he doesn't like talking to him) and he doesn't see the immediate need to tell Angel. ]
How unfortunate it is that I both understand and agree with such a sentiment.
That is exactly what I am getting at though. Most people seem to be unable to come to harm here. I have no doubts that my father could do something, especially to me, but he isn't anywhere near capable enough to do what he did back home. I find some comfort in that, is all.
The next day, Walter made sure he was at the bakery early. He had left his coat open for once, letting it be tugged at the breeze as he stood outside. One hand was inside a pocket, thumb rubbing over Angel's gift. He hoped it was okay, both what he had to give her and the mere fact that he had something for her, besides whatever they chose to eat together..
As usual, he had one of his Pokemon with him to act as a 'rock', in case he got too lost in his own thoughts or was distracted by bad memories. Today Reed had been very fussy and demanding attention, so it was Reed who accompanied Walter. He perched on his shoulder much like Darkness did, alternating between preening himself, attempting to preen Walter and actually looking around them. His presence was enough to help Walter relax, as he was already worried about being told to stop loitering around the shop front.
[As strange as it is, Anthy's kneejerk reaction is silence. For someone to admit to being hurt by someone in any capacity is mind-boggling to her. Even when she was the one being slapped around - the least of her worries - she never said anything about it to anyone who would actually care, but here in front of her, someone else is sharing their experience, vaguely. Very vaguely. Enough to make Anthy properly concerned, though.]
Is there any way you can avoid him for good? If you understand what's been done, then you shouldn't allow yourself to come to similar harm. Whatever it is, of course.
[Unlike Walter, Angel was closer to being on-time than anything else. Navigating and not being overwhelmed by Goldenrod was often a herculean task. Despite leaving relatively early, she still found herself rushing to get there.]
[All of that rush drained out of her upon seeing Walter and his pokemon. She smiled at both of them from afar, offering a wave before approaching. Smoosh was at Angel's side this time, while Skagbait, as usual, watched from afar.]
It's good to see you Walter. [She spoke this as soon as she figured he was within hearing distance. Knowing him, she resisted the urge to embrace him, but instead stood with her hands clasped, beaming at the man.]
[For Angel, Jack's abuse was as normal as breathing. And it had been her policy, since arriving, to be honest about who and what Jack was. Not everyone had taken her words to heart, but it'd done some good for those who cared to listen.]
[That was all that mattered.]
Honestly, Jack is... I want to say he has calmed down. I want to say he won't hurt anyone again. But even here, he's hurt people to a lengthy degree. I want to say I trust him, but I do not.
In any case, the more I avoid him, the worse he gets. Better that I play a role, than let others come to harm because of me.
"It's good to see you too." Although his smile was still shy, Walter's entire demeanour brightened and opened up a little as Angel approached. Reed hooted and bounced on his shoulder excitedly. He held open the door for her as they walked into the bakery. "How have you been? And how was your birthday?" He had gone over in his head what he should ask and say, while waiting for her. He wasn't very experienced in making small talk but it helped that he genuinely wanted to know how she was.
But you must ask yourself if it is worth it in the end. Even if it was just one other person, would they come to harm because you came to harm? If someone cares as deeply as that, then it's worth rejecting that role.
